2005 Mazda MX5 RS

Mazda MX5 Drive

Intro.

2005 Mazda MX-5 RS!

This being the ‘NC’ variant it was the 3rd generation of the Mazda MX-5.

The MX-5 has become much safer over the years which inevitably adds on some weight. However this generation still has all the charm and character of the original MX-5. As you would expect they're an absolute blast in the summer months but just as enjoyable in winter. Nothing quite beats having the roof down, windows up and heater on driving around and looking up at snow capped mountains in the south island.

Thanks in part to it's pureness the MX-5 still holds the world record for the best selling two seater sports car of all time.

Engine.

Fitted with a 2.0L inline 4, this MX-5 puts out 170 bhp at 6,700 rpm and 140 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm. Not the most powerful of engines, however with the lightness, balance and close ratio gearbox of the car it doesn’t need to have huge power. Having driven much more powerful cars recently including a Lexus ISF 5.0 V8 with 428 bhp, I can honestly say that the MX-5 is more fun on a twisty road. You can really use all of the power all of the time.

The Oil and Filter is due within the next few hundred km’s, this will be done for the new owner.

Exterior.

The exterior is nice and tidy with just one larger scratch worth noting on the rear quarter panel (passenger side). You can see a photo of this in the ‘Finer Details’ below. There are also a few very small marks on the drivers door, usual carpark type scratches that wouldn’t be worth painting. The car is painted in Mazda’s brilliant ‘Galaxy Grey’. It’s a colour that can change quite drastically in different light. Some very minor kerbing on passenger side alloys as can be seen in the photos.

Interior.

3 pedals, 6 speed manual, perfect driving position and no buttons on the steering wheel, perfect!

More often than not a cars steering wheel including newer/higher spec MX-5’s can be cluttered with controls for phones, cruise control, radio and other distractions. These cars are all about the driving fun where less is more. The interior is nice and tidy with just a few tiny marks on the steering wheel and slight carpet wear detailed below in ‘Finer Details’. The last owner replaced the roof within the last 2 years, still looks brand new. Heated rear glass window also in perfect condition. No leaks from the roof even after a thorough wash or heavy downpour.

Recent Work.

Usually here we would detail any recent work along with the invoices.

No major work has been needed on this car.

We will have the car serviced before sale as it’s almost due.

The finer details.

Here we have tried to highlight the areas which aren’t so good. The car is very tidy for it’s age, below are just some very minor point’s.

  • Minor wear in drivers side carpet from where you would rest your foot.

  • Minor wear in steering wheel, small scratches caused by drivers wearing rings.

  • Scratch on rear quarter, can be seen just behind the door, going up towards the soft top.

  • Two small scratches in drivers door, usual car park door type marks.

The Drive.

There are few cars out there that have received as many awards for driving pleasure and pure brilliance as the MX-5. Throughout the different generations it has often been top of it’s class against cars in the same field. With perfect 50/50 weight distribution you feel completely at one with the car. Add in the beautifully weighted and direct steering, rear wheel drive, short shift gearbox and you have the perfect setup.

Reason for selling.

At emotive cars we enjoy buying and selling the cars that we would buy for our own collection. Although at times we wish we could keep every car we purchase, sadly we can’t keep them all. We use and enjoy the cars that we own, this way we can see what/if any areas need addressing before sale. I have owned a few MX-5’s over the years and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. We will no doubt have more pass through emotive cars.
